OK, the first leaves started to turn yesterday on certain of the maples.
The ailanthus (sumac) is bright red, as are the rose hips on the wild
roses. The goldenrod and garden phlox are fading fast, but the apple
pickers are afoot in large packs. (This is the heart of apple country.)
Pumpkins are appearing on the stands, and there's a full harvest moon
tomorrow (with a total eclipse for everyone east of the Rockies).
Because cooler weather has come and colder air is soon to come, I
started to winterize today, which means closing some of the storm
windows, putting away the fans, and cleaning debris from the garden.
The latter is a task put off too long, and one that will not be
completed before it snows. Since my kitchen is above a root cellar with
just a mud floor, it gets very cold, especially the floor, which
essentially is separated from the out of doors by only the thickness of
a 1x12 and a layer of tile. So I have large dog pillows for Pookiekins
and Chinakins to lie on in the winter months. I noted that one of the
covers has a large tear in it, so I went to the store where I bought it,
to purchase a new cover, as I have done many times in the past. There
were no covers, but there were plenty of new cushions with covers for
prices ranging from $29.95 to $59.95, depending upon size. We use the
biggest ones. When I inquired about the availability of covers, I was
told they don't carry them anymore because they are too expensive.
Clerk: Yes, they cost almost as much as a new pillow with cover, so we
decided not to carry them any longer.
Clerk: Well, you can buy a whole new thing for practically the same
Me: How much difference is there between a new cover and the whole
Clerk: Well it depends.
Me: On what?
Clerk: Which one you buy.
Me: Oh. Well the largest one--it's marked $59.95.
Clerk: Oh. Well, let me look in the book. Oh, here it is, it
would be $29.95.
Me: But that's a difference of $30.00!
Clerk: Well, it seems pretty close to me.
Me: But even if I spent $30.00 more, what would I do with the old
cushion, which is perfectly good?
Me: I said, what would I do with the old one? It's still good, except
the cover is all torn.
Clerk: Oh! Well, throw it out. Why would you want a cushion without a
